SEIN team member publishes new book

January 06, 2010

Kevin Elliott’s book Is a Little Pollution Good for You? Incorporating Societal Values in Environmental Research is slated to come out with Oxford University Press this year.  The book examines a range of ways in which policy-relevant research incorporates methodological and interpretive value judgments. Elliott argues that societal values should not be excluded from these judgments, but that the values of powerful interest groups tend to play an overwhelming role in current research on many policy-relevant topics. Elliott discusses several strategies for incorporating a broader range of societal values in such research. He is currently working on a research project that examines the nature of "precautionary science" (i.e., scientific activity that advances policy action in accordance with the precautionary principle).  Case studies from contemporary research in nanotoxicology figure heavily in Elliott’s projects.
